Tips on How to Save Power of a Laptop When Travelling

You often go on business trips, family retreats or other events and somehow have to go with your laptop. So its important to know how to save power of a laptop when you travel otherwise frustration of being in a perfect place, where you can use your laptop to do a thing or two but you can’t because your battery is down is something you most probably have experienced. All this frustration can be avoided by following a few simple steps that helps save power and thus giving you a longer use of your laptop.

Save power

Reduce the power you are using when unplugged from a power source by reducing the brightness of your computer.
On your keyboard there are two button one with a shape resembling the moon and the other a shape resembling the sun. Turn the brightness of your laptop down by pressing the button with the moon on until the brightness is dim to your liking.   This will reduce your power consumption considerably and thus increasing your battery life. To increase the brightness again, just press the button with the symbol resembling a sun and your screen’s brightness will increase to your desirable level.

To save power further make sure that you turn off all background programs that are not needed at the moment. Most people run background programs that may not be very important like downloading music or installing a program both which can be done at a letter time when you have a steady power source. When your laptop is unplugged from a power source always make sure you are not running any other program that has no priority to what you are doing.

Eject all CDS and DVD in your drives if you are not using them at the moment. In practice even if you are not running your CD drive the disc will still be spinning inside the drive and this consumes a lot of power.  When you are turning off all other background programs remember also to eject all the CDs and check that Bluetooth and in-built wireless adapters are off in case you are not using them.  Some laptops have a way of turning off the LED lights which includes power light and hard drive activity light when the battery is running low. Always check your user manual on how to do this so that you can save power on your laptop and buy yourself some time to finish what you were doing without power disruption.

Unplug all USB devices you are not using, such as flash disks, iPads, and external hard disks among others. All this plug-on use power and the more they are plugged in the more power they draw from your laptop.  And if you are to leave your laptop unattended for a while due to an emergency, don’t just leave it on, turn it to standby mode or sleep mode. This will save more power as only a few minimal components such as the memory are left running and will quickly allow you to resume working once you are through with the other issue you were handling.  And if you are sure it will take a much longer time and you don’t want to turn off your laptop just switch to hibernation mode and you will save a lot of power while away when you have not turned off your computer.
